I
don't know what the hell is going on with vimeo right
now.
It used to be one of my go-to sites for discovering new
and inventive film-making.
Now, when you do a search you are met with a 'corporate
solutions' landing page. Endless menus which seem designed
to stop you actually seeing any videos. Even when you
try to browse the site, you get pointed to their 'staff
picks' page with just a dozen or so choices, often with
several trailers and useless shiny corporate ad campaigns.
Worse still, the vids have started to take ages to load.
Being
slightly obsessive, I decided to just make sure my connection
was OK, and I was getting all the broadband I was due.
I was going to install a prog called 'Connectivity Fixer'
which had worked well on another computer - until I
read the small print. Jeezus ... talk about spyware.
So I managed to find TCP Optimizer, a no-install booster
that raised my speed from 300mbs to 450 (!). It was
also a good excuse to put a link on here for Major Geeks
(see below). I was quite surprised recently to find
out that several savvy people I knew had never heard
of it (?!) ... It made me think of my early days on
the internet - trying out downloads on some of those
freeware sites and all the spyware/ bloatware and actual
viruses that came with them. Major geeks are ace. They
deserve a medal.
Don't
know about Vimeo. I'll be interested to see what the
reddit world has to say about it. Be a shame if it goes.
We need a video source without stupid ads or cat video
links at the end of each vid. Youtube also had the maddening
habit of downgrading your videos. I've spent hours editing
1080 or even 4k vids, only to see them online a couple
of weeks later and they're not even in HD any more.
And as for Google taking 'em over ... a sure sign of
decline ...

P.s:
I've been singing the praises of the Brave browser of
late ... it's still good - but it has some strange
quirks. For one, it can take up to an hour to show newly
uploaded stuff (!?) Secondly, it intermittently refuses
to play embedded youtube vids on sites (A well-known
and long term problem - sort it out guys !)... oh and
a lot of secure sites don't like it. I've forgotten
how many times I've had to click boxes to prove I'm
a human (mediafire especially) ... ho hum ... the quest
for the perfect browser ... the search goes on
